What is Botox?
Short for Botulinum Toxin, Botox, is a manufactured injectable medication used therapeutically and esthetically to reduce the strength of targeted muscle tissues.
How does it work?
Once delivered to the muscle, the active protein binds the neuromuscular junction, and blocks Acetylcholine from being released, which inhibits muscles contraction. In short, it stops the muscles you don’t want to contract from contracting.
From a TMJ treatment standpoint, the “overworked” muscles causing the pain will not be able to do so. Thus, returning the muscles to their normal working rate, helping to alleviate the added pressure causing your facial pain.
How long does it last?
Like anything in medicine, everyone is different. It is not recommended to have treatment done more frequently than every 3 months.
Can I only do it if I have pain?
No, anyone can benefit from the effects of Botox treatment. If you have any sort of head and neck pain, or if you just want to have a more youthful appearance by getting rid of those unwanted wrinkles, Botox can work for you.
